Philodendron ‘Black Cardinal’ is a striking self-heading philodendron hybrid from the Araceae family, celebrated for its dramatic dark foliage and compact growth habit. Unlike climbing philodendrons, this variety grows as a rosette from a central base, making it an excellent statement plant for smaller spaces.

The foliage is the main attraction. New leaves unfurl in shades of deep burgundy to rich chocolate brown before maturing to an almost black-green with a glossy sheen. The thick, leathery leaves are broadly oval with smooth edges, creating a bold, architectural form. As the plant grows, the contrast between fresh red-burgundy leaves and older dark ones produces a constantly evolving display of colour.

Typically, Philodendron ‘Black Cardinal’ reaches 60–90 cm in height indoors, making it more manageable than many other self-heading philodendrons such as Philodendron ‘Imperial Red’. Its striking colour palette and relatively low maintenance make it a favourite for modern interiors and collectors of unusual foliage plants.

Philodendron ‘Black Cardinal’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light but also tolerates medium light levels. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which may scorch the dark leaves, but ensure enough light to keep the foliage glossy and vibrant.

Watering

Water when the top 3–5 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly moist in spring and summer, but ensure excellent drainage to avoid root rot. Reduce watering slightly in winter.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Best in 18–26°C. Protect from draughts and prolonged cold below 15°C.

  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50%+). Mist occasionally or place near a humidifier to encourage lush growth and prevent crispy leaf edges.

Soil and Potting

Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix – peat-free compost blended with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir works well. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and give roots room to expand.

Feeding

Feed every 4 weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Feeding is unnecessary in winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune by removing old or yellowing leaves at the base to keep the plant tidy. Wipe the large glossy leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and highlight their sheen.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower, usually reaching 60–90 cm tall and wide indoors. Its rosette growth habit keeps it compact and upright, making it well suited for floor displays in modern homes.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Usually a sign of overwatering.

  • Crispy edges: Low humidity or underwatering.

  • Pests: Can occasionally attract thrips, spider mites, or mealybugs.

Background and Benefits

Philodendron ‘Black Cardinal’ is a man-made hybrid, bred specifically for its bold foliage and compact size. Its deep, glossy leaves bring a touch of sophistication to any setting, and like many philodendrons, it also contributes to improved indoor air quality by filtering toxins.

Easy Read with good case studies!!
Format: Paperback
I had to purchase this for my Advanced Pathophysiology class in my Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. It is very easy to understand and have pretty good case studies. I like that the CD that accompanies the book goes into some detail in explaining the cases further and the disease processes without giving you the answers to the questions. It stimulates one to think!! Once this class is over I will go back from time to time to review!!

Helpful
Format: Paperback
This is a nice compliment to other classroom instruction materials. I am teaching an advanced pathophysiology course in a nurse practitioner program. This book is very helpful for students to put together the concepts of patho with the clinical setting. Will use these for in-class group assignments. Case-studies are thorough and offer a variety of different disease processes to choose from. It certainly does not offer a case study for every possible disease or clinical scenario, but does cover most major areas and enough variety in my opinion. Should be helpful in reinforcing the clinical significance of some difficult to understand concepts. I would recommend this text to course instructors.
