Garmin Edge® 840 GPS Cycling Computer

Compact GPS cycling computer with 2.6-inch touchscreen + button controls, 26-hour battery life, solar option available, multi-band GNSS, adaptive coaching, ClimbPro, power guide, preloaded maps, Varia compatible. $449.99.

Our Take: The Edge 840 is the battery life champion. At 26 hours in demanding use — and up to 42+ hours with the Solar model — it outlasts every other compact Edge by a wide margin. The newer x50-generation models (Edge 550 and 850) traded battery for a brighter screen: they last just 12 hours with their vivid transmissive LCDs. If you ride long, ride often, or hate charging, the 840 is the obvious choice. It’s also the lightest (85g) and most compact, the only one with a solar option, and at $449.99, it’s the least expensive model in this comparison. The 840 has both a touchscreen and 7 physical buttons, preloaded maps, multi-band GNSS, ClimbPro, power guide, stamina insights, and a deep training feature set that covers everything most cyclists need. What you give up vs. the newer models: the 840’s 2.6-inch transflective display (246×322) is noticeably dimmer and lower resolution than the 2.7-inch transmissive LCDs on the Edge 550 and Edge 850 (420×600, 1,000 nits). You also miss the x50-generation software: Cycling Coach plans, Smart Fueling alerts, 5Hz GPS, Trailforks with Forksight, weather radar overlays, GroupRide data, enduro/downhill profiles, gear ratio analysis, and road hazard alerts. If screen quality and those modern features matter more than battery, step up to the Edge 850 at $599.99 (same touch + buttons, speaker, Garmin Pay) or the Edge 1050 at $699.99 (3.5″ screen, 20h battery). But for riders who prioritize battery life, light weight, proven reliability, and value, the Edge 840 remains the smart buy.

Edge 840 — Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I buy the Edge 840 when the Edge 850 is newer?

Battery life. The Edge 840 delivers 26 hours of demanding use vs. 12 hours on the 850. That’s more than double. The 840 also has a solar option (840 Solar) that extends to 42+ hours. If you ride long distances, do multi-day tours, or simply hate charging frequently, the 840 is the better choice. The 850’s advantages are a brighter/sharper 2.7-inch transmissive LCD (vs. the 840’s 2.6-inch transflective), a speaker with bike bell and voice prompts, Garmin Pay, on-device course creation, Cycling Coach, Smart Fueling, 5Hz GPS, Trailforks, weather radar, and GroupRide. If those features matter more than battery life, the 850 at $599.99 is the upgrade.

Does the Edge 840 have a touchscreen?

Yes. The Edge 840 has both a touchscreen and 7 physical buttons. You can tap, swipe, and pan the map via touch, or use the buttons for everything. This combination works reliably in all weather conditions — touchscreen in dry weather, buttons in rain or with gloves.

What’s the difference between the Edge 840 and Edge 840 Solar?

The Edge 840 Solar adds Garmin’s PowerGlass solar charging layer to the display. In outdoor riding conditions, solar extends battery life from 26 hours to approximately 32–42 hours depending on sunlight intensity. In battery saver mode, solar can push the total to 60+ hours. The Solar model is slightly heavier (~89g vs ~85g). If you ride outdoors frequently and want maximum battery autonomy, the Solar is worth the premium.

How does the Edge 840 compare to the Edge 550?

The Edge 550 ($499.99) is a newer x50-generation model with a dramatically brighter 2.7-inch transmissive LCD (420×600, 1,000 nits) vs. the 840’s 2.6-inch transflective TFT (246×322). The 550 adds Cycling Coach, Smart Fueling, 5Hz GPS, Trailforks with Forksight, weather radar, GroupRide, and enduro/downhill profiles. The 840’s advantages: much better battery (26h vs. 12h), a touchscreen (the 550 is buttons-only), lighter weight (85g vs ~110g), and a solar option. The 840 costs $449.99 — $50 less.

What training features does the Edge 840 have?

VO2 max, training status, training load, training effect, recovery time, performance condition, FTP estimation, heat and altitude acclimation, stamina insights, power guide (recommends power targets throughout a course), cycling ability classification, daily suggested workouts, ClimbPro Ascent Planner, and structured workouts from Garmin Connect, TrainingPeaks, and other platforms. Most advanced training features require a compatible heart rate monitor and power meter.

What sensors and accessories are compatible?

The Edge 840 connects via ANT+ and Bluetooth LE to heart rate monitors, power meters, speed/cadence sensors, Shimano Di2 and SRAM eTap/AXS electronic shifting, smart trainers, Garmin Varia radar and camera systems, and Garmin Rally power meter pedals. Wi-Fi is built in. Compatible with Connect IQ for custom apps and data fields. InReach device compatibility for satellite communication.

What’s in the box?

Edge 840 GPS cycling computer, out-front bike mount, standard mount with rubber bands, tether, USB-C charging/data cable, and documentation. A sensor bundle version is also available that includes HRM-Dual heart rate monitor, speed sensor, and cadence sensor.

GREAT DURABILITY FOR MY XL SUPER CHEWER !
My dog LOVESSSSS this toy. It’s definitely one of her favorites! I have a Pit-Mastiff mix and she loves to chew toys, but her breed also means she’s got an outrageous amount of strength in those jaws, making it hard to find toys that can last without getting torn up super easily. We typically buy Kong “Super Chewer” toys and this has held up better than those! We’ve had it a good few months and it’s super durable. She gnaws on this thing every day for a good bit of time, and it doesn’t have any weak spots, holes, chunks missing, NOTHING, except a few dimples. It’s firm but also has give to it that (I think) really provides a good chewing option. It’s got enough weight and give to it that I can throw it for her and it’ll bounce without flying around crazy like some toys. The toy itself is not super cute, but my dog definitely is when she’s carrying it around everywhere 🥹 My only con is that I wish it came in other colors! I was surprised that she liked it so much because she typically prefers bright colored toys like red/orange/blue/green. It took some time, but once she warmed up to it and realized she could chew as hard as she wanted on it, it was game over from there.

Extremely Durable
This is truely for heavy chewers. Both my bully mixes have chewed through every bone/ball including Kong. They have had these for about 6 months and they are hardly worn. The dogs love chewing on them too. I wish they came in flavors.

Must have toy
Found out the hard way my sweet little shy rescue pup can chew through any toy in under 5 min. If it says indescribable they have never met her....until this toy. It has been almost two weeks now. She loves this thing and you cannot tell she has even tried to destroy it. If she does manage to somehow I am instantly buying another. This thing is awesome, a must have for super cheers, and she LOVES it

Not even close to "virtually indestructible" as described.
Within an hour of receiving this K9 Chew Stick, our 55lb Staffordshire Terrier began chewing pieces off the top of toy. Initially, we were happy to see that our dog enjoyed the chew toy, and it appeared to be durable. For the high cost of this toy, it is very disappointing that pieces can start coming off that quickly. Luckily, our dog wasn't swallowing the pieces, which can easily lodge in their intestines. If your dog is NOT an aggressive/determined chewer or they are happy with chewing for very short periods of time, this toy might be okay for them.
