Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem'

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' is a dark-petioled variant of the Philippine species Alocasia zebrina, grown for glossy arrow-shaped leaves held on deep burgundy, dark brown or espresso-toned stems. It keeps the upright zebrina habit, with dark vertical petioles rising below clean green blades.

The plant grows from a corm and builds a narrow upright shape with leaves lifted above the pot. Mature blades are glossy green, sagittate and carried on long petioles that can darken strongly as the plant matures. Some stems reveal red-brown or burgundy tones in the sheaths and younger tissue.

Dark petioles and glossy green blades

The petiole colour separates Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' from the typical striped zebrina look. Stems can range from dark burgundy and deep brown to espresso-black on mature growth. Colour may vary with plant age, light and individual growth. The leaf blades stay green, glossy and arrow-shaped, with a smooth surface and pointed lobes.

New leaves emerge from a tight spear and lift above the base as the petiole elongates. The dark stems remain visible beneath the foliage, giving the plant strong vertical lines. Indoor plants often reach around 60–120 cm tall with maturity, with final size shaped by warmth, root volume, light and corm strength.

  • Leaf shape: glossy sagittate leaves with pointed lobes and an upright presentation.
  • Stem colour: deep burgundy, dark brown, espresso or blackish petioles on mature growth.
  • Growth habit: upright, corm-forming growth with long petioles and a narrow base.
  • Indoor size: medium to tall in pots, often around 60–120 cm once established.
  • Visible contrast: dark stems, green blades and a strong vertical line from the pot upward.

Zebrina context and Black Stem form

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' belongs under the cultivated zebrina group. The species Alocasia zebrina is accepted from the Philippines and is known for glossy sagittate leaves and patterned petioles. In this dark-stem form, the petioles develop deeper pigment, while the growth habit remains corm-based, upright and warm-growing.

Because the plant carries a corm and long petioles, indoor care needs to keep roots active and stems firm. Filtered daylight keeps the plant upright, warmth keeps the corm active, and an airy substrate prevents moisture from lingering around the base. The darker stems look strongest when the plant grows evenly and replaces leaves steadily through active months.

Growing dark-stem zebrina

  • Light: steady bright light out of harsh sun keeps green leaves firm and petiole colour deep. Gentle morning sun can suit acclimated plants, while hot direct sun can mark the blades.
  • Water: water once the upper 25–35% of the mix has dried. The corm grows strongly with even moisture followed by complete drainage.
  • Substrate: use an open aroid mix with bark, pumice or perlite, coco fibre and a small moisture-retentive fraction. The lower mix needs airflow after watering.
  • Humidity: aim for 60–80% humidity for smooth leaf expansion and fewer dry tips. A humidifier or warm grouped plant area helps large new leaves expand evenly.
  • Temperature: keep the plant at 20–28 °C in the growing season, with nights above 18 °C. Warmth around the pot keeps the corm active.
  • Feeding: feed lightly while the plant is actively growing with diluted complete fertiliser. Regular low-strength feeding suits large leaves and long petioles.

Potting, dark stems and seasonal growth

A balanced pot is important as the plant gains height. Use a draining inner pot and a heavier outer pot if the tall petioles make the plant lean. Repot once roots fill the current container or the mix loses structure. A measured pot increase helps the corm expand while the mix dries at a healthy pace.

The dark stems show marks, dust and mineral residue clearly. Wipe leaves gently and brush petioles with a soft dry brush if substrate particles collect on the sheaths. Keep water from sitting in the base after cleaning. Rotate the pot as the plant produces new leaves so new petioles rise evenly around the centre.

Growth can slow when winter light drops. During this seasonal pause, lengthen the interval between waterings and keep the plant warm. Older leaves may yellow after a new leaf opens or after a change in conditions. Propagation is by offsets or corms with active growth points, started warm and humid in a small airy pot.

Dark petioles under strain

  • Yellowing leaves: several yellowing leaves together usually point to excess moisture, cold roots or a tired mix. Check the lower pot and base firmness.
  • Soft petiole bases: softness near the base means moisture has lingered around the corm. Refresh the mix and keep the plant warm during recovery.
  • Edge browning: dry air, heat load or fertiliser salts can mark the leaves. Lift humidity and run plain water through the mix to reduce residue.
  • Weak stem colour: dim light can soften growth and reduce colour depth. Increase filtered brightness gradually.
  • Mite and thrips damage: sap-feeding pests can mark leaf backs and new spears. Inspect undersides, base folds and petiole bases often.

Handling dark zebrina petioles

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' contains irritating oxalate crystals in the leaves, petioles and corm. Chewed leaves or petioles may cause mouth and throat irritation, drooling, swelling, vomiting or swallowing difficulty. Keep the plant away from pets and children, and wash hands after pruning or dividing.

Dark stems on zebrina

Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' is a cultivated dark-petioled variant of Alocasia zebrina. The species name zebrina refers to the zebra-like petiole pattern of the typical Philippine species, while 'Black Stem' describes the deeper petiole colour of this cultivated form. The plant remains connected to the zebrina group through its upright corm growth, glossy arrow-shaped leaves and long petioles.

Dark petioles and clean green blades give Alocasia zebrina 'Black Stem' a sharp vertical contrast.

Easy assemble and not to big!
Color: Black, Size: 132in-Large Metal Base
I bought this because I fo a lot of zoom/teams meetings and work just mandated no false backgrounds (don’t ask) soooo to hide my real home and allow others to roam free while I work I got this. Easy to assemble although you will need some space. I thought I might be to big at 11’ wide as I have a small desk area but actually it’s perfect and could use a couple more panels. Leaves just enough room so I’m not completely cocooned - I can move my chair and get up walk behind chair and exit space. Great deal and tax deductible!

Fair Quality, Hour and a half build
Color: Black, Size: 132in-Large Metal Base
Key things: It does (more or less, not completely) fold in on itself, it does block nearly all visibility (especially from an angle), it was only about an hour and thirty minutes to put together, and it is light weight. Do I recommend? Yeah.

Assembly was a bit rough
Color: Black, Size: 132in-Large Metal Base
It is serving the purpose it is bought for. However the assembly was harder than it should have been. Joining the parts A and B (two iron pipes) was very hard. We can't use any tools to do that and it has to be done manually and every joint was very tight and very hard to to do. I had to struggle to make 24 joints for the length I need. At one point I was going to return it, but I needed it very badly so continued with the assembly.
