The TWA SH9 is based on the SD-9 circuit developed in 1981, but redesigned to meet Scott Henderson's exacting performance standards. Tamura shifted the center frequency of the TWA SH9's tone controls to focus on the low-mid and low-bass ranges, so that turning up the tone controls doesn't lose the bass frequencies that Scott believes are essential to making the guitar sound good in the treble range.
The thick, full sound combined with the naturally moderate compression of the TWA SH9 allows for a high level of expression of Scott's trademark horn-like, flowing lead tones.
Another useful improvement to the TWA SH9's circuitry is the increased output level, which allows the guitar to have more presence in a full band. Tamura also designed the SH9 to operate on either a 9V or 18V power supply. Scott only uses the 9V version, but powering it with 18V gives it more headroom and a slightly different character with less compression and less distortion.
The TWA SH9 has an aluminum chassis coated in a beautiful and durable metallic purple powder selected by Scott (and we at TWA love it!) Only the highest quality components such as ALPS potentiometers, Marushin jacks, KOA/Speer resistors, WIMA, Nichicon & Kemet capacitors are used in the SH9 circuitry to maintain the highest standards of sound quality and durability.
