Echeveria purpusorum

Echeveria purpusorum is a small, slow-growing Mexican Echeveria with a tight rosette and thick pointed leaves. The foliage is usually deep olive green to grey-green, marked with reddish-brown mottling that gives the plant a dark, patterned look.

The rosette stays compact and develops slowly, with pointed leaf tips, firm fleshy blades and irregular markings across the leaf surface. In a pot, it forms a dense miniature rosette with pointed leaves and mottled surfaces.

Small rosette features

  • Growth habit: Forms a tight, low rosette with thick leaves arranged close to the centre.
  • Leaf pattern: Olive to grey-green leaves are marked with reddish-brown speckles, patches or edging.
  • Slow development: Builds size gradually and keeps a compact footprint in a container.
  • Flowering: Mature plants can produce reddish to orange-toned flowers with yellow detail.
  • Species background: Native to dry shrubland habitats in Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico.

Dry habitat and compact growth

This Mexican species is recorded from Puebla to Oaxaca, where it grows as a succulent subshrub in desert or dry shrubland biome conditions. Its thick leaves, dense rosette and modest growth rate need brightness, mineral drainage and long dry intervals.

The old synonym Urbinia purpusii reflects the plant’s historically distinct look among Echeveria: a dense, nearly stemless rosette with broad, pointed leaves and mottled surfaces. The thick leaves and small rosette need careful watering, a small pot, a fast-drying root zone and light feeding during active growth.

Dry, bright care for Echeveria purpusorum

  • Light: Give very bright light with gentle direct sun after acclimation. The tight rosette opens and stretches when the plant sits too dim.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly, then allow the substrate to dry completely. The slow growth rate means moisture use can be modest indoors.
  • Substrate: Use a gritty, mineral-heavy succulent mix. Fine, moisture-retentive soil increases the risk of root and crown rot.
  • Potting: Keep in a small pot with drainage holes. A snug container helps the substrate dry at a pace that suits the compact root system.
  • Temperature: Keep above 10 °C and protect from frost. Winter growth should stay on the dry side with as much light as possible.
  • Humidity: Normal dry indoor air is usually suitable. Avoid trapped moisture between the tight leaves.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth. Heavy fertilising can weaken the compact rosette shape.
  • Propagation: Offsets, when produced, can be separated after they have formed their own roots. Let wounds dry before potting.

Problems in tight miniature rosettes

  • Open, loose growth: A stretched rosette points to low light. Increase brightness gradually to protect older leaves from scorch.
  • Soft centre: Moisture trapped in the tight crown can cause rot. Water the substrate directly and keep the rosette dry.
  • Sudden leaf collapse: Check roots for rot if several leaves soften at once while the soil is damp.
  • Deep wrinkling: Severe wrinkling after a long dry period means stored water is low. Rehydrate with a full watering once drainage is confirmed.
  • Hidden pests: Mealybugs can sit in the leaf axils. Inspect carefully because the patterned leaves can hide early colonies.

Safety around pets and children

Echeveria purpusorum has smooth, fleshy leaves and no spines. Keep the plant away from pets and children that chew leaves, and clear away detached leaves during routine care.

Spelling and botanical background

The spelling Echeveria purpusorum is widely used in cultivation, while the accepted botanical spelling is Echeveria purpusiorum A.Berger. Urbinia purpusii Rose is an older synonym. The epithet honours the Purpus collectors, and the plant belongs to Crassulaceae, the stonecrop family.

Echeveria purpusorum forms a small dark rosette with mottled, thick pointed leaves.

Decent air mattress if you take care of it
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
I’ve been buying this air mattress, and its previous model, for the last four years. I used to go camping and attend festivals about six times a year, and I wasn’t particularly nice to my air beds. Most of the time I didn’t fold them back up neatly or put them in the storage bag. I’d just deflate them, throw them in the car, and head to the next event. Even with that treatment, they held up surprisingly well. I was nervous about buying the new version with the redesigned inflate/deflate module, but on a whim I decided to give it a try. I used it during a five-night camping trip near Tygh Valley, Oregon at the end of May 2026, where temperatures ranged from about 85°F during the day to around 40°F at night. Did it lose some air over the weekend? Yes. Was it enough to bother me? No. In fact, over the entire five-night trip, I only had to add air once. Considering the temperature swings, I was impressed with how well it held up. The new model does seem to take a little longer to deflate than the older versions, but that’s a minor complaint. Overall, I’m very happy with it. I’ve had good luck with these mattresses over the years, and this new version seems just as solid as the previous model. I would absolutely recommend this mattress and will continue buying this model when it’s time to replace mine.

Better than our actual mattress!!
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen, Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
Purchased for company to stay with us in our apartment. I honestly had no idea they made air mattresses this tall until I saw a friend with one! My husband and I tested it out last night. We were both really impressed! 1. Really easy to inflate! First time having an internal air pump. No more forgetting the pump! The motor wasn’t nearly as loud as our previous air pump! I was able to talk to my husband and he could still hear me over the pump running. 2. Really comfortable and supportive! We chose not to inflate it fully so it contoured to our bodies better. We slept on the mattress with no sheets and I wasn’t able to feel the creases in the top which was nice. No issues with sagging and we both didn’t wake up smooshed in the middle. My husband got up in the middle of the night and I didn’t notice. So movement of the mattress is minimal! Easy to get on and off with the 22” height. 3. Easy to deflate! We followed the instructions for folding and we got it in the storage bag with no issues. Just make sure all of the air is out before you fold it. 4. High quality! We had both of our small dogs on this with us. I was afraid of their nails poking a hole but so far so good! Only a little bit of air leaked out but it could’ve been the material stretching out during the night. Cons: The pump does not shut off automatically when inflating or deflating. So keep an eye on it so it doesn’t overfill. The mattress does get cold at night. My husband and I both mentioned that in the morning. I had to roll up in my blanket to stay warm. I’ll try sheets on next time. In the summer it might not be that big of an issue. Ours came with one patch. Hopefully we won’t need to use it.

A lot of comfort for a very inexpensive price
Style: 18", Color: Grey, Size: Twin
We needed a spare mattress, but didn’t want to have a dedicated spare bedroom but wanted a comfortable bed. Couldn’t afford these high priced mattresses these days like the air beds or luxury coil spring with gel which are thousands of dollars. Miss air mattresses, very comfortable and adorable and I like the flocked top on it. And it has the self inflatable pump which is very easy and inconvenient. This makes a very inexpensive alternative. Even if it only lasts 6 months or so you can buy a whole lot of these for a lot less money than thousands of dollars for the other beds. In tax is a wonderful brand. I’ve bought it many times. Their vinyl material is very thick and durable. Intex makes flotation devices, blowup rafts, beach floaties, Kayaks, etc. They have an excellent product & know what they’re doing.

Great Queen Size Air Mattress - NO Fuss
Style: 18", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
Great air mattress! Comfortable to sleep on. Powerful pump. Nice size. The bag to store it is very convenient and one of the easiest to put bed in once deflated. Reviews spot on with this product.

Skeptical at first, but after first use (so far) it’s a solid product
Style: 22", Color: Grey, Size: Queen
I initially bought this to stay at my MIL’s senior community (to help her get settled), so I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on it and I planned to leave it for other relatives that might want to visit. I expected it to be cheap-ish quality and probably not last through my two week stay. First off, set up was a breeze. I laid it out and started inflation and it took about 4-5 minutes to fully inflate. The motor made noise, but it’s to be expected from something like this—I can say that it wasn’t as noisy as our Costco-bought mattress. Second, it’s big—but that’s not a bad thing as much as I thought anyway after I saw it fully inflated. Turns out, for me, it’s a good thing. Our Costco mattress sits low to the floor and as it deflates a bit during the night, it’s tough to get up. This one (the 22” model and the largest one at this writing) is wonderful as I can sit on the edge of it and stand up easily. Your experience may be different, but for older folks it makes it really easy to get out of bed in the morning. How does it sleep? Well, since I was visiting by myself and my significant other wasn’t with me, I can only speak for a single sleeper. It was really comfortable! It did take a bit of tweaking though as I thought I would like it more firm as I like to side sleep. The first couple of nights were a bit rough as I tossed and turned a bit in my sleep—I found that I couldn’t get comfortable on my side. For the reviews that say that it deflates after sleeping on it, I can say that it did seem to lose some air after the first two nights. The manufacturer does state that it does “stretch” and not deflate. As I wanted to test that statement, I didn’t change the firmness of it by re-inflating it to where I had it. The third and fourth nights were better sleep and I didn’t feel like the mattress deflated at all, so I found the stretch statement to be valid—it wasn’t losing air. After that night, I re-inflated it to where I thought I’d like it. The next night was the same tossing and turning that I had those first two nights, so I concluded that I needed to make it less firm and I actually DEflated it a bit and for the rest of the stay it was perfect! I didn’t have to touch it and I even unplugged it. When I was getting ready to leave, I started the deflation process by turning the dial in the opposite direction. It took longer to deflate, so I walked away for a bit—I’d guess about 7-8 minutes. When I came back the mattress was flat as a pancake and ready to fold. This is the only hassle of the process as folding it to get it into the storage bag and back into the box (for storage). I do like the tote that they provide as the handles make it easy to lug about. So, the first use was a success. If repeated uses reveal issues, I’ll report back. I will say that I plan to buy another one to replace our beloved Costco air mattress—she’s showing her age and the height of this one as well as the cost make it a no-brainer to get it as a second. We’ll use this one until it dies (if it even does) and then fall back on our old one if needed. I gave an overall 5 stars for the product with 4 stars for sleep quality and comfort only because your idea of these two might be a bit of a learning experience until you find your inflation sweet spot—so it’s not just an “inflate fully and use” type of scenario.
