Purple Waffle Plant (Hemigraphis alternata)

Purple Waffle Plant is a colorful foliage plant that brings deep purple tones and rich texture to indoor spaces and shaded patios. The crinkled, velvety leaves add instant contrast, making other greens look brighter and more intentional. It stays low and spreading, so it fills the surface of a pot, trails gently from a basket, or works as a warm-climate groundcover in the right conditions. If you want a high-impact leaf plant that looks styled without needing flowers, this one delivers.

Distinctive Features

The signature look comes from puckered, waffle-textured leaves that show metallic green on top with intense purple undersides and stems, with color strongest in bright light. The habit is low and spreading to lightly trailing, forming a dense mat that can soften container edges and cover soil cleanly. Small, inconspicuous white flowers may appear at times, but foliage is the main attraction. Mature plants are typically about 6 to 8 inches tall and can spread about 12 to 18 inches wide with regular pinching and good growing conditions.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Bright, indirect light indoors, or part shade outdoors, and protect from harsh afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Rich, humus-forward, well-drained potting mix or garden soil that holds moisture without staying soggy.
  • Water: Moderate, keep soil evenly moist during active growth and let the surface dry slightly between waterings.
  • USDA Zones: USDA Zones 10 to 11 outdoors, and grown as a houseplant elsewhere.
  • Mature Size: About 6 to 8 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, trailing longer if not pinched.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a focal point in a container where the purple foliage can anchor the planting and add strong contrast at eye level.
  • Houseplant Displays: Place on shelves or plant stands in bright indoor light for the best color and texture.
  • Hanging Baskets: Let stems trail for a soft cascade of purple foliage along the pot edge.
  • Container Ground Layer: Use as a living mulch over the soil surface around taller houseplants and patio pots.
  • Warm-Climate Groundcover: In frost-free areas, plant in part shade to create a dense, colorful ground layer.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Pinching: Pinch tips regularly to keep the plant compact and encourage fuller, denser growth.
  • Watering: Water when the top layer begins to dry, then drain well and avoid standing water.
  • Light Adjustment: Increase light if color fades, and reduce direct sun if leaves scorch.
  • Humidity: Provide average to higher humidity for best leaf quality, especially in winter indoor air.
  • Propagation: Root stem cuttings in water or moist mix to refresh plants and fill in thin spots.

Why Choose Purple Waffle Plant?

  • Bold Foliage Color: Purple and green leaves add instant depth and contrast to indoor and shaded plantings.
  • Textural Interest: Waffle-like leaf texture creates a styled look even without blooms.
  • Compact Coverage: Low, spreading habit fills containers and covers soil surfaces cleanly.
  • Easy Shaping: Responds well to pinching, so you can keep it tidy and full.
  • Versatile Placement: Works as a houseplant, a patio container filler, or a warm-zone groundcover.

If you want the best color and density, give Purple Waffle Plant bright light, steady moisture, and occasional pinching. Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy, and the foliage will stay plush and vibrant. Used as a repeating foliage accent, it brings a consistent purple thread that makes plant groupings feel more intentional.

The best chew, play and teeth cleaning toy
Size: Blue
I have a 24 lb medium australian labradoodle multigen. She loves to chew and nothing soothed her teething like this toy. It also cleans the adult teeth that came in. So win win. The squeakers didn't last but that was my fault for squeaking it to tire her out in play. We personally love this toy and will purchase it again when it wears out. So thanks for a great product. 😉

Not indestructible, but pretty close!
Size: Yellow, Size: Yellow
I adopted a pit mix a little over a month ago, and so far he's managed to destroy every single toy he's had, including ones meant for aggressive chewers. He's a sucker for a good squeaky toy, and this had good reviews (and was affordable) so I decided to check it out. He's had his corn for a week now, and surprisingly, it's still holding up pretty well - though there are some caveats to that. My boy didn't even want to wait for me to take his corn out of the plastic bag, he too excited to get it. He went to town immediately, to the point where he was sitting in a puddle of his own drool after about an hour. He managed to squeak it (which I couldn't do myself), but still hasn't really gotten the hang of doing so - and the squeaker, when wet, does sound a little... Well, wet. He managed to have bite marks in it within the first six hours. Within a day, there were tiny bits of yellow rubber starting to appear anywhere that he played with this toy. A week later and there are some decent sized chunks missing from the corn - some of which I've had to cut off when they got loose and I worried about him choking on them. He loves his corn cob, and will likely get at least a few more weeks of play out of it before I have to toss it for his safety. I'm unsure of whether the squeaker is still functional, but he seems to love it whether or not it squeaks. Overall, it's not a bad toy for most aggressive chewers, but it will not last forever. The rubber is as heavy as the regular red Kong toys, but it feels slightly softer, which might contribute to his ability to break off little pieces. Make sure you keep an eye on your dog with this toy, or with any other, especially if they are chew goblins. But I'd definitely buy this toy again.

Solid piece

Border Collie loves it. Great for aggressive chewers. Prefers this to the carrot or the pineapple one. Probably better for large dogs than my medium size dog as there is some heft to it.
