Alocasia 'Portadora' - Portadora Elephant Ear

Alocasia 'Portadora,' commonly known as Portadora Elephant Ear, is a striking hybrid Alocasia known for its enormous, glossy green leaves with wavy, ruffled edges. This impressive tropical plant adds bold texture and height to landscapes and interiors with its large, upward-reaching foliage. Reaching up to 1.5–2.5 meters in height, 'Portadora' creates a dramatic, lush atmosphere in any setting, whether indoors or outdoors.

Position

Portadora Elephant Ear thrives in partial sun to partial shade and prefers warm, humid conditions. Outdoors, it grows best in a sheltered area with protection from strong winds and harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch its leaves. Indoors, it does well near a window with filtered light.

Growth

This robust, fast-growing Alocasia can reach a mature height of 1.5–2.5 meters with a spread of about 1–1.5 meters, forming a tall, upright clump. Its bold, large leaves and architectural structure make it ideal for tropical-themed gardens, as a focal point in outdoor beds, or as a statement plant indoors.

Planting Guide

Alocasia 'Portadora' grows best in rich, well-draining soil that retains moisture. For outdoor planting, choose a location with partial shade. Indoors, use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix. Plant at soil level, water thoroughly, and apply a thick layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

Plant Care

Water consistently, especially during the growing season, to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Humidity is important for 'Portadora', so mist the leaves regularly or place a humidifier nearby if grown indoors. Fertilise every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser to encourage vigorous growth. Prune away any yellow or damaged leaves to maintain a tidy appearance and healthy plant.

Outstanding book
Format: Hardcover
Yes, Aristophanes was a genius in using satire to sting the then politicians. Oh! How we could we use his abilities today in the US! I highly recommend this (and other similar) books to anyone who likes or loves to read excellent books with morals. With this book I now have all of Aristophanes's plays to read over and over to my grandchildren, who love them. Thank you.

This salty 'Frogs' has got legs
Format: Hardcover
I had to read 'Frogs' for school, all the translations I'd found were awful, then I stumbled upon Mr. Henderson's translation and hit the jackpot. No Dryasdust prissiness here, the language is earthy and accessible, and the scholarly footnotes are also very well done.

An excellent translation of Aristophanes' finest works
Format: Hardcover
This book, the fourth in Dr. Henderson's fine series of parallel translations, is perhaps the best of the series, containing as it does the comic masterpiece "Frogs," in my opinion the finest of Aristophanes' works. Henderson's translations are crisp, clear, and hilarious, and his extensive use of vulgarity is always textually and philologically sound (as a few comparisons of Liddell-Scott and the OED will surely reveal). In short, it is the definitive edition of Aristophanes' works, and the only translation accurate enough to be worth having on your bookshelf (and believe me, I've read quite a few).
