Smittybilt XL Roof Top Tent Gen 2 - 4 Person Capacity

The Smittybilt GEN 2 Overlander XL Roof Top Tent (SKU 2683) is the largest soft shell tent Smittybilt makes — and one of the best values in the overlanding industry. This Smittybilt roof top tent sleeps 3–4 people on a king-size 92.5" × 74.8" mattress, sets up in minutes, and costs less than half what premium brands charge for comparable capacity. With over 60 years of off-road engineering behind it, Smittybilt designed the Gen 2 XL for serious overlanders who want spacious, reliable shelter without spending $3,000+.

The Smittybilt XL roof top tent Gen 2 improves on the original Overlander XL in every way that matters. The upgraded 420D oxford rainfly now includes see-through skyview panels so you can stargaze without removing the fly. The 1040gsm 2000D PVC travel cover with UV-resistant Velcro straps replaces the basic cover from the Gen 1. And the redesigned rainfly extends coverage between windows and entry doors — a common leak point on the previous model. It's the tent that proves budget-friendly doesn't mean cutting corners.

At Off Road Tents, this Smittybilt overlander XL ships free with the full 2-year manufacturer warranty. We've sold hundreds of these tents and know the fitment, installation, and accessory compatibility inside and out. If you have questions before ordering, call us at 844-200-3979.

Why Choose the Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander Tent XL

King-Size Sleeping Space for 3–4 People

The Smittybilt XL tent opens to 122" W × 76" L × 51" H — significantly larger than the standard Overlander Gen 2 (SKU 2583). The king-size mattress measures 92.5" × 74.8", long enough for campers up to 7 feet tall. Two adults can stretch out with room to spare, or a family of four can sleep comfortably. No other Smittybilt roof top tent offers this much sleeping area at this price point. The 60mm high-density foam mattress with removable machine-washable cover delivers surprisingly good comfort for a tent in this price range. You'll wake up rested, not sore.

Upgraded Gen 2 Features That Actually Matter

Smittybilt didn't just slap a "Gen 2" label on the old tent. The Smittybilt Gen 2 XL includes meaningful upgrades: the rainfly now has see-through panels for skyviewing without removal, extended rain coverage protects the gap between windows and doors that leaked on the Gen 1, and the new 2000D PVC travel cover is drastically more durable than the previous version. The telescoping anodized aluminum ladder has been redesigned for smoother operation, and the underside entrance (accessible from inside your vehicle) adds a second entry point for privacy and foul-weather access.

4-Season Capable at a Budget Price

The 600D heavy-duty ripstop polyester canvas with polyurethane impregnation and a 2000mm water column rating handles snow, heavy rain, and sustained wind. This is a genuine 4-season Smittybilt roof top tent — not a 3-season tent marketed with optimistic claims. The aluminum/polyurethane sandwich base insulates against cold, stainless steel hinges won't corrode in salt air or humidity, and the 770 lb load capacity means the frame itself is seriously overbuilt. Many overlanders run the Smittybilt gen2 overlander tent XL year-round from desert heat to mountain snow.

Universal Vehicle Compatibility

This roof top tent Smittybilt designed fits virtually any vehicle with a roof rack or crossbar system rated for 148+ lbs dynamic capacity (the tent's gross weight). Jeeps, Tacomas, 4Runners, F150s, Tundras, Subarus, and SUVs — we've helped customers mount the Smittybilt overlander tent XL on all of them. The closed dimensions of 47" W × 76" L × 11" H keep the profile manageable for everyday driving. The Smittybilt overlander XL gen 2 dimensions closed make it one of the more compact XL-category tents when packed down.

Outstanding value — 4-person capacity with 4-season construction at a price point that undercuts most 2-person competitors

Who Should Buy This Tent

Budget-Conscious Families

If you need a 4-person roof top tent that doesn't require financing, this Smittybilt XL roof top tent is the answer. The king-size mattress gives a family of four genuine sleeping space, and the 4-season construction means you won't need a second tent for winter trips. At roughly $400–$500 per person of sleeping capacity, it's the most affordable Smittybilt roof top tent that fits an entire family.

Overlanders Who Want Space Over Speed

Setup takes 5–10 minutes — not the 60 seconds you'll get from a hard shell. If that tradeoff is fine with you, this Smittybilt XL roof top tent delivers significantly more interior volume and sleeping area than hard shells costing 2–3x more. The 51" interior height lets you sit up comfortably, and the all-side window layout provides ventilation that hard shells can't match in warm weather.

Jeep, Truck & SUV Owners

This Smittybilt roof top tent mounts to any vehicle with crossbars or a roof rack rated for its weight. We've sold the Smittybilt XL roof top tent for Jeep Wranglers (4-door JL/JKU), Toyota Tacomas, 4Runners, Ford F150s, RAM 1500s, Subaru Outbacks, and dozens of other platforms. The 47" × 76" closed footprint fits most factory and aftermarket rack systems without overhang issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Smittybilt Overlander XL Gen 2 dimensions closed?

The closed dimensions are 47" W × 76" L × 11" H. When packed in the travel cover, the packing size is 78" × 49" × 12". These dimensions fit most standard roof racks and crossbar systems without extending past the vehicle's width. The 11" closed height keeps the profile low for everyday driving, parking garages, and highway aerodynamics.

How much does the Smittybilt roof top tent weigh?

The net weight (tent only, installed on your vehicle) is 139 lbs / 63 kg. The gross weight including packaging is 148 lbs / 67 kg — you'll discard the packaging after installation. For rack capacity planning, use the 139 lb figure plus 20–30 lbs for bedding and mounting hardware. Your roof rack or crossbar system needs a dynamic weight rating of at least 170 lbs to safely carry this tent.

What's the difference between Smittybilt Gen 1 and Gen 2 Overlander XL?

The Gen 2 (SKU 2683) improves on the Gen 1 XL (SKU 2773) in several key areas: the rainfly now includes see-through skyview panels for stargazing, extended rain coverage protects the previously vulnerable gap between windows and doors, the travel cover upgrades to a 1040gsm 2000D PVC construction with UV-resistant straps, and the telescoping ladder has been redesigned for smoother operation. The Smittybilt Gen 2 tent body canvas, frame, and mattress specifications remain similar, but the upgrades address the most common complaints from Gen 1 owners.

What vehicles does the Smittybilt XL roof top tent fit?

The Smittybilt Gen2 Overlander Tent XL fits any vehicle with a roof rack or crossbar system rated for 170+ lbs dynamic capacity. This includes Jeep Wranglers (4-door JL/JKU), Toyota Tacomas, 4Runners, Ford F150s, RAM 1500s, Chevy Colorados, Subaru Outbacks, and most mid-size to full-size SUVs and trucks. For trucks, we recommend mounting on a bed rack rather than cab-mounted crossbars for better weight distribution. Always verify your specific rack's dynamic weight rating before purchase.

Is the Smittybilt Gen 2 XL a 4-season tent?

Yes. The 600D heavy-duty ripstop polyester canvas with polyurethane impregnation and 2000mm water column rating provides genuine 4-season protection. The aluminum/polyurethane sandwich base insulates against cold ground temperatures, and the stainless steel hinges resist corrosion in humid and coastal environments. Many overlanders run this tent comfortably in snow, heavy rain, and desert heat. For extreme cold, we recommend adding a sleeping bag rated to the expected low temperature and a high R-value sleeping pad on top of the included mattress.

Gothic Star Wars
Format: Paperback
This trade paperback collects all the issues for the Screaming Citadel story spread over several titles, including the main stay Star Wars series and the Dr Aphra book. As one might expect from a story spread over different titles with different artists and writers, the presentation varies. The art is all over the place. In the Marco Checchetto-drawn initial issue, everyone’s favorite amoral artifact hunter, Dr Aphra, is a striking space vixen. But in the following issues she’s hardly recognizable as the same character--mousier, if still menacing, in her trademark Russian tanker’s hat. To a lesser degree, the same is true for the other characters, including the main SW group. It’s understandable, but a bit disconcerting. The story centers on Dr Aphra, who, in need of a Jedi for one of her typically nefarious purposes, recruits Luke into her scheme. Unfortunately for Aphra, she’s up against a more ruthless foe in the harlequin-looking vampire-like Queen of the Screaming Citadel. Before long, the rest of the group has to show up to rescue them. It’s a gothic story, set in scary castle—not the usual Star Wars fare. There are some good points. Dr Aphra’s almost sociopathic outlook is always good for a few choice lines, the “murderous machines” Bee Tee and Triple Zero are on hand for their own gruesome commentary and some of the Queens hench-people, while not given much to do, are interestingly designed. But overall, the horror movies plotline didn’t seem much like Star Wars to me. Recommended for those who enjoy that type of story, or completists.

Luke and Doctor Aphra team up!
Format: Paperback
This is the second crossover event in the Marvel Star Wars comics. It brings the ongoing Doctor Aphra and Star Wars series together. I liked the pairing of Luke with Aphra. They play well off of each other with Luke's naive goodness and Aphra's experienced gray morality. I liked when she called him a wannabe padawan. There are some well designed characters in this comic. The residents of the Screaming Citadel have a goth bdsm vibe. Luke even gets to dress up. I liked seeing him in something different. I want to know more about Sana and Aphra's past!!! Please, Marvel, make a queer love story prequel!!! The murder droids are wonderful. Having them on the same side as the "good guys" for at least the time being led to some funny situations. The last panel intrigued me. I give this graphic novel a 4/5. I am always here for more Doctor Aphra!

Source material for Nolan's trilogy is powerful writing and art...
Format: Paperback
The Long Halloween is great, but I actually had more fun reading through Dark Victory. It's a crime mystery that consistently had me guessing through to the conclusion about who The Hangman's true identity was. What I really loved most was the evolution of the characters' personalities--from Jim Gordon to Harvey Dent to Bruce (who really is more in his iconic "Batman" persona here)--that began in Batman: Year One to Batman: The Long Halloween and into Batman: Dark Victory. It really does work like a trilogy. It's also notable to include Gotham city's underworld itself as a character of its own. Batman begins (pardon the pun) in Year One with a quest to sort of rid the city of the mafia, which is and has been the main criminal body up until this point. In The Long Halloween, the mafia begins to lose power because of the rise of the Batman's presence. During that time, some of the most insane and dangerous criminals escape Arkham Asylum and begin quietly terrorizing the city anew, spreading like a virus. Slowly, the "freaks"--as the mafia calls them--start to gain more and more power by simply being a more unorganized crime source (as opposed to organized crime). Characters like Pamela Isley, Solomon Grundy, Mr. Freeze, the Penguin, Scarecrow, the Joker, and others, establish and strengthen their grips on Gotham's criminal underworld. It's nice that these villains--these "freaks"--also aren't the main conflict in Dark Victory (or The Long Halloween or Year One, for that matter); they appear when it is effective for them to appear, slowly taking more prominence in the setting of the story as it progresses. The main conflict has to deal with the solving of the mysteries behind The Hangman killings. The Long Halloween and Dark Victory are, primarily, crime mysteries, which is what makes them interesting. What makes them great literature, however, is the creative team that is Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Loeb's writing is really well-crafted here: the entire arc unfolds at a consistent pace and he balances out dialogue with Batman's internal narration very smoothly. And, as I mentioned previously, personality and narrative arcs of the main characters (Gordon, Batman, and Dent) have fully matured by this point in the trilogy, leaving the supporting characters a chance to evolve and come into their own. Much of these progressions are not just depicted by the writing, however; Tim Sale (who worked previously with Loeb on The Long Halloween) elevates and perfects his artwork in this story. There's not a change in the look of the characters, so you know it's definitely his style, but you sense immediately (especially if reading Dark Victory right after finishing The Long Halloween) the new level of attention paid to composition of the drawings. Shadows and silhouettes, contrasts between setting and characters, everything adds to the mood and atmosphere of the characters and the scenes they're a part of. In terms of the print itself, the paperback is excellent. This and The Long Halloween have really nice paper, which I'll catch myself sometimes randomly sniffing in the middle of a read to enjoy the new paper smell. The ink is really crisp, the colors pop, and the design of the book itself is laid out very clearly. There aren't page numbers or a contents page, but every issue is separated by chapter pages that include gorgeous, high-contrast artwork to help distinguish which issue you're on. Additionally, the print comes with an introduction by David S. Goyer, who co-wrote the Nolan film trilogy. Overall, I can't stress enough how gorgeous this trade paperback is and how excellent and top-tier this story arc is. I really enjoyed it just as much, if not more so, then The Long Halloween. No other Batman story arc has topped my enjoyment of this particular trilogy. Highly recommended in addition to Batman: Year One and Batman: The Long Halloween.
