Cyclamen are charming flowering plants known for their vibrant and distinctive blooms that appear to face downward with their petals swept upwards, resembling butterfly wings. They belong to the family Primulaceae and are primarily native to the Mediterranean region and parts of Europe, making them well-suited to similar climates, like ours here in Northern California. Here are some key details about cyclamen:

Appearance

Cyclamen plants have heart-shaped, patterned leaves that are often as attractive as the flowers themselves. The leaves can be dark green with silver markings. The flowers come in shades of pink, red, white, and purple and are noted for their upright, twisted petals.

Blooming Season

Indoor cyclamen typically bloom in the cooler months, from late fall through early spring, providing a burst of color when most other plants are dormant. Outdoor species have varying blooming periods based on their natural habitat and climatic conditions.

Care

  • Light: Cyclamen prefer bright, gentle light. Hot intense sunlight can scorch their leaves, while too little light can reduce flowering.
  • Water: They like moist soil but it’s crucial to avoid persistent waterlogging. Water from below by filling the saucer under the pot, allowing the plant to absorb what it needs, or water carefully at the base to avoid wetting the crown or leaves.
  • Temperature: Cooler temperatures between 50-65°F (10-18°C) are ideal, making them perfect for cooler, drafty windowsills in winter.
  • Soil: A well-draining potting mix is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Fertilization: During the growing season, a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer can be used every couple of weeks.
  • Dormancy: After blooming, cyclamen enter a dormancy phase. Reduce watering and stop fertilizing, allowing the leaves to die back. In late summer, resume watering to wake the plant up for the next cycle.

Propagation

Cyclamen are typically propagated by seed or division of tubers. However, propagation by seed can be challenging and requires patience, as it may take up to a year for seedlings to flower.

Uses

Cyclamen are popular as both indoor potted plants and as part of shaded garden beds or borders in suitable climates. They are also frequently used in seasonal displays and as holiday plants due to their winter blooming period.

With their attractive foliage and unique blooms, cyclamen add a touch of elegance and color to any setting, making them beloved by gardeners and floral enthusiasts alike.

Great play and chew toy!
Pattern Name: Star
The dogs love these! They're sturdy and give them plenty of chew time. The size is great and they are very playable. The dogs have a lot of fun and the weight is just enough for our little dogs.

Great Dane Tested and Approved 5 Star
Pattern Name: Checkered, Pattern Name: Checkered
A picture is worth a thousand words applies to this product, as you will see in the attached photos these stand up to the abuse of a Great Dane. He has dragged me around the yard for hours already with this in his mouth and the stretchy handle keeps it shape. This ball is a little firmer than others of these I have had in the past, which helps exercise his giant jaw. I could get a few weeks out of the other brands I have bought. This brand is still like new well past the time others have failed. I will be ordering more as my French Mastiff is interested in one of his own (the boys do not like to share toys - most dog guardians understand).

Holding up well.
Pattern Name: Checkered
Seems to be holding up to my aggressive chewer. I have it hanging from a tree branch and she loves leaping to get it! Buying another pair so she has a greater selection around the backyard.
