Overview
Our Regenerative Organic Certified® Chinese Skullcap seeds from Gaia Herbs® grow into a hardy, perennial herb with striking purple flowers and aromatic leaves. Traditionally used to support relaxation, liver health, and overall wellness, Chinese Skullcap also attracts pollinators and adds vibrant color to your garden. Its roots have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years.
Conditions
Chinese Skullcap thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. It tolerates a variety of soils but grows best with consistent moisture.
Planting
Option 1: Cold stratify* 2–4 weeks, and then plant indoors 2–3 weeks before the last frost. Press 2–3 seeds into the soil surface of each starter pot – do not cover (needs light). Transition outside (harden) 7 days before transplanting outdoors into a raised soil bed, leaving 2" of pot exposed.
Option2: Direct sow outdoors in the fall.
*Cold stratify: place seeds in the fridge in a moist, folded paper towel before planting.
Care
Once established, Chinese Skullcap is low-maintenance. Water during dry periods, prune spent flowers to encourage new growth, and provide good airflow to prevent overcrowding.
Pests and Disease
Chinese Skullcap is generally hardy, with few pest or disease problems. Occasional aphids or fungal spots may appear, but proper spacing, airflow, and organic treatments help keep plants healthy—here’s a link to our favorite homemade insecticidal soap recipe for plants! Proper drainage and avoiding overwatering also help prevent root rot.
Harvest
Harvest leaves and flowers when fully grown for teas or tinctures. Roots can be collected in the fall of the second year for traditional herbal uses.
